Statue de la Liberté

Written June 17, 2015

On the Google home page today you can "Relive the Creation of the Statue of Liberty". Fascinating to read about the vision and commitment it took to create it. Today marks the 130th anniversary of its delivery to the US.
Of all the symbols or representations of what it means to be "American", she is my favorite by a street (as they say in horse-racing).
Something about her quiet strength and dignity; about the fact she was a gift from long-distance friends, and not a monument or tower of our own creation.
Something about the sandaled feet stepping out of broken chains.
Something about she being a she!
And of course, the way she became a symbol of immigrants - their hopes, and dreams, and incredible will to create a better life.
I always try to imagine what that first sighting must have meant to each passenger of those inbound ships...what it must have meant to my grandfather.
