So, spending a fews days at the Huntsman Cancer Institute sure wakes you up out of any kind of complaceny you may have fallen into. Watching a beloved family member be forced to walk through her greatest fears and into the unknown; anxious moments waiting through surgery; anxious moments waiting for the pathology report.
Then surrender, relief, gratitude, and joy, in that order.
And the knowing - as you walk around this building and see the grief and fear and anxiety in the faces of others - that for some reason we may never fully understand in this life, it was our family that was handed the miracle today, when others clearly weren't.
We think we're cruising through life on a long green light, but in reality, I think it's yellow.
One phone call, one lump, one turn in this direction when you could have gone the other - everything hangs in a most precarious balance.
And it's a blessing in disguise when we're given the scare of our lives and come out the other side knowing - really knowing- that life is precious; health is precious.
And loving and being loved - fully and deeply - is most precious of all.
